2019 Chairman’s Welcome Message
This year I proudly accepted the role as Chairman of a very passionate and hard-working organising committee for the Stan Siejka Launceston Cycling Classic.
As it is also the 10th anniversary of my brother Stan’s passing and naming of the race in his honour, I feel very privileged to be a part of this outstanding world-class event.
The criterium was first raced in 2002 and started with an idea by cycling enthusiast Stan Siejka and former professional cyclist Tom Sawyer, to attract Australia's Tour de France riders along with several of Australia's up-and-comers to their home town of Launceston.
The event has gained momentum every year since, and continues to be strongly supported by the Tasmanian State Government, Launceston City Council, Launceston's cycling and business communities, for which we are very grateful.
It has now evolved into a world standard event, with competition from international elite riders, national teams and local champions.
This year the event will be held on Sunday 8th December; coinciding with the completion of the Tour of Tasmania a day earlier. This allows the opportunity for as many riders as possible to enter the event that is run around Launceston's famous landmark - City Park.
Competitors will once again face the challenging 16% gradient climb up Lawrence Street, which then takes a hard left into the famous "peanut" roundabout, where thousands of spectators gather annually on a section of the course that never fails to deliver dramatic racing.
This year sees the welcome return of the Women’s Elite Race, which will be the prelude to the Stan Siejka Launceston Cycling Classic.
The 5km handicapped running event, which was a new feature last year, will once again be popular with the crowd with an outstanding field on display. This year, the race will be headlined by Olympic marathon runner Milly Clark, who finished 18th at the Rio Olympics In the Women's Marathon.
Live-streaming of the Women's and Men's elite races will be available again after the success last year, where over 22,000 viewers tuned Into the action.
We are excited to be part of the Cycling Australia 2019 National Criterium Series.
The Stan Siejka Launceston Cycling Classic is Australia’s most unique and best street criterium.
We look forward to welcoming you to this great event, and with free entry, excellent spectator vantage spots, food vans and a big screen, make sure you come out and be part of this fantastic day.
Save the Date: Sunday 8th December 2019John Siejka
